How Important Are First Pages?

April 11th, 2010 in EI News by April Michelle Davis 0

In February, I spoke at a Christian Writers Retreat in Williamsburg, Virginia. I spoke to the writers about the importance of their first pages and what their first pages needed to include.

In the two-hour session, we discussed four goals and ten components that their first pages needed to address.

In the thirteen-minute audio, you can hear the beginning of the presentation, along with a short discussion about the four goals, which are as follows:

  1. Introduce a story-worthy problem
  2. Hook the readers
  3. Establish the rules of the world
  4. Forecast the ending

Many people say that these items will determine whether a reader will stay with the book through the end. How important are these to you in your own writing or reading?
