Cold calling can be a great way to find new clients. Often, publishers respect the fact that you took the time to look them up and make contact. When cold calling, be sure to introduce yourself and give your area of expertise. Then simply ask if that publisher hires freelancers. If the answer is yes, request to speak to the individual in charge of hiring freelancers.

Also, don’t underestimate the value of word-of-mouth marketing. Remember to always present yourself as a professional, and your clients will share the positive experiences with their colleagues. As testament to this type of marketing, I have recently taken on several new clients who were referred to me by my patrons.
