EI Publishes Book of Its Own
April Michelle Davis has published a booklet, A Guide for the Freelance Indexer.
For anyone who entertains the idea of learning to become a successful freelance indexer, April Michelle’s new book, A Guide for the Freelance Indexer is a must-have read—and it also makes a welcomed gift to a reference collection.
April Michelle’s approach to presenting the information is logical and easy to follow. Beginning with the obvious question, “what is an index?” through to the conclusion, where she discusses the necessary steps to become a professional. April Michelle details the nuances of indexing in a way that even a novice can understand.
In her booklet, April Michelle uses her expert knowledge to tackle some of the tougher issues, such as dealing with names, numerals, and footnotes/endnotes as well as going into the step-by-step process of setting up an index entry.
The flow of the booklet brings together a complete work on the subject matter. Or each chapter may be treated as a stand-alone for the indexer who just needs a refresher on a topic such as main headings, cross-references, or invoicing. Included in the booklet is a chapter on software where April Michelle supplies the reader with a basic understanding of each and a basis for comparison before buying.
This booklet is a valuable addition to any freelancer’s library and is one that will not sit idly by gathering dust, but will quickly become dog-eared from extensive use.
If you would like to browse this booklet or meet April Michelle, she will be at Celebrate with a Book, a book fair held at Regency Square Mall in Richmond, Virginia, on December 15.
April Michelle Davis is Chair-Elect, Mid-South Atlantic Chapter, American Society for Indexing and the Virginia Chapter Coordinator, Editorial Freelancers Association.

Book review on Amazon: “This is a book that specifically discusses what an indexer does, and I found it fascinating. I am not an indexer, nor do I want to be. But I now understand more about how an index is created, its importance, and how to use one. That last point was a surprise to me as I thought I already knew how to use an index. Well, there’s always something new to learn. Excellent book.”
